Select Soccer Tryouts

Important FAQ's

How can I join a Select team?

All players must be selected through try outs for a position on Challenge and Classic teams per NCYSA rules.  All positions for Challenge & Classic teams in North Carolina are open for Official Team Try outs in late May & Early June.  At any other time of year, teams with an open position may hold a supplementary tryout as needed.  Watch this website, your local newspaper, and the RMAYSA bulletins for tryout dates.

What Age Bracket does my  player belong in?   Age Calculator Note that Challenge Soccer is organized by two year brackets.  Players need to play in the next higher age bracket if they fall between even years.

Who should tryout for Select Soccer?

Any youth who with motivation and athletic ability who wishes to experience the fun and competition of upper level soccer is welcome to tryouts.  While Select players usually have played recreational or select soccer before, we also get great players from basketball and other sports who want to try a new competitive challenge.

Player Expectations - What is required of a Select Soccer player?

  • Select players are expected to recognize they have a commitment to their team by attending practices & games with high regularity.  Signing the player passcard is a commitment to that team for the duration of the NCYSA year ( September through the following August).
  • Players must show good sportsmanship, respect for others, and team spirit.  Honor the Game.
  • Travel is a part of Select Soccer.  Players must be available to travel for games.  This requirement is lesser for the Challenge level (average less than a hour for 4-5 games per season ) and grows with the comittment to Classic (average about 90 minutes for 4-5 games per season).  Individual team programs vary on tournament travel requirements.
  • There are some additional costs associated with Select soccer over the recreational level.  These vary with the individual team program but the RMAYSA Select Division has been working to keep these costs down.  We have one of the most value oriented programs in the state with significant savings over most other quality programs.
  • Players must show good skills and be willing to work toward improving in skill, knowledge and athletic condition.
  • Players must be no older than the age requirement set for each team.

HONOR THE GAME

To honor the game we look to our R.O.O.T.S. -

  • RULES - Honor the rules you play by for rules allow us to play fair.
  • OPPONENTS - Honor the opponents you play.  Without an opponent there would be no competition.
  • OFFICIALS - Honor the officials who serve you.  They are fallible as are we all but that too is a part of the game.
  • TEAMMATES - Honor the teammates you play with.  They are your brothers and sisters both on and off the field.
  • SELF - And honor yourself by living up to the highest personal standards.  To win in life is true success.
