The Gist of the Process-
- Contact RMAYSA - We'll help you through the steps. email
- Identify your age and division desired. Down East Soccer Scheduling league is the place our Challenge teams play. Older teams may play cross league play. See www.DownEastSoccer.com
General Information
- Establish your staff.
- Coaches-There can be up to four listed on the roster including the team manager.
- Team manager - Generally responsible for paperwork to NCYSA, primary contact for registrar, organizer for away games and in charge of notification and information.
- Treasurer - It is now required that each team have a treasurer which provides regular financial statements to the coach and to the team families. Policy should be set on who and when and how expenditures can be made though generally all but small funds should have a consensus of more than one and be completely transparent to the rest.
- Coaches-There can be up to four listed on the roster including the team manager.
- Establish a budget. RMAYSA has an Select Cost Excell Spreadsheet(updated for 2007-08) which will help with understanding the costs involved. Recreational registration lumps many of these things together but with Select teams, you will need to be able to cover:
- Down East Challenge Fees - $200 Commitment to Play Team Fee. Due early July 7. Classic Intent to play is due about June 15th.
- RMAYSA fees - These include all team fees (including NCYSA) for the year and are due with your initial registration roster submittal to NCYSA in July>
- Uniforms (You will have a wide variety of choices here. Try Eurosport or Score or any number of other companies for a beginning idea on what to budget)
- Referees fees (paid in cash on game day) Referee Fee Schedule
- Tournament Fees - Strictly optional usually due at registration a month or so before the tourney. Tournament Listings
Note: In looking at Select Programs around the state, RMAYSA offers one of the most competitive programs. See our Select Team win-loss record for confirmation of that. Our passion within the Select Team families really drives this program forward. RMAYSA cost to the player are significantly less than nearly anyone else for both the professional staffed programs like CASL and the volunteer organizations like Wilson. The cost differential for Classic is substantially greater still.
- Decide on Fund Raising efforts - RMAYSA in the past has had several really successful golf tournaments. All Select teams are welcome to participate, contribute in this endeavor which will assist making these teams budgets easier for all. Individual teams have been successful in garnering sponsorships in the past but the this single large event has greater potential to promote soccer. Watch this website for more information coming up.
- File Paper work as noted in Critical Dates section below. Take note of the time line for team formation
RMAYSA Select Soccer Tryouts will be the week of May 21st. These are usually two days for primary tryouts with all Select Teams participating. Tryout Information
Select your team from primary tryouts. Hold supplementary tryouts as required at your own pace.
Commitment to Play for Down East Challenge will be due the first week in July. This will require a deposit sent into Down East Soccer League at the time.
Work with your registrar to assemble Round One Registration Materials. See Registrar's Page
Hold parent meetings to work on team formation and organization. Establishing a "vision" for the team that is agreed upon by all participants is a good thing from the beginning. Schedule practices.
Challenge Team management will work with the Down East to establish a mutually acceptable schedule within Down East guidelines. This scheduling occurs immediately following the Classic Schedule meetings which are currently slated for July.
- Round Two Registration Day - This is passcard day with your Registrar. All players will have passcards signed and photos. You will receive your official registration paperwork back along with rosters etc.
Games will commence in middle September through early November.
Coaches Commitment
RMAYSA has a commitment to excellence, character & fun. Each coach is required to show continual support of these principles:
Commit to Excellence -
- Develop all players in skill, athletic conditioning, and game knowledge
- Plan for future growth in your players - Player mastery will provide for superior successes both on and off the field in the long run over a win-at-all cost approach.
- Commit to develop yourself as a coach as an ongoing process.
- Commit to support & promote youth soccer. Promote volunteer attitudes in your families as an expected part of Challenge team participation. Your team and your association cannot run without many hands contributing in many ways.
- Develop all players in skill, athletic conditioning, and game knowledge
Provide leadership in ethics & character building.
- Show good work ethic & focus- Be on time and prepared for all events. Work with Team Manager, Treasurer, & RMAYSA officials to ensure good information and organization of team business. Encourage your players to do likewise.
- Promote good sportsmanship and team work with example and leadership.. Be clear in these expectations with all participants.
- Honor the rules, the opponents, the officials, the team and self. R.O.O.T.S.
Include and encourage fun.
- An enjoyable atmosphere is a requirement that must not be lost in the pursuit of competitive soccer. It is after all the "beautiful game."
- "it is not fun anymore" is the single most repeated reason for kids leaving soccer.
Improving Your Coaching Credentials -
Going Select for a team may mean the Coach is going to be learning new things too. RMAYSA now requires all Coaches to have official license credentials. Don't be too worried about the competition. Focus on your kids mastery of the game and your own development and keep the fun alive. Down East recommends Challenge coach's work toward getting a D or E License as age group appropriate. Here are links for both course outline and manual...so you can bone up on your own time until you can go for the official stuff. Registration Information -
Your registrar, Adelia Ramey, have been working to organize registration for the smoothest process ever. Each team will have a primary Registrar handling their registration process but will be able to use either registrar for follow up needs in the coming year. Registration can be a little confusing. There are two main objectives registration covers - that all children have insurance while playing and that kids are playing at the right age and level for them. We are here to get the process done and the kids out on the field. See our Registrar's Page
Manager's Notebook -
It is required that each Manager create a “ Team Notebook” to be carried with you for all games, events, & practices. This notebook will reduce the chances of forgetting or losing important information. The following items should be included in the notebook:
- Copies of Commitment to Play paperwork/forms
- Current copy of the Discipline and Appeals Manual
- NCYSA Challenge Handbook/NCYSA Rules -
- Down East Challenge Rules- CHALLENGE HANDBOOK
- Field Coordinator and Referee Assignor/Weather Hotline contact information
- Pitch Legend (field identification for away games) see www.downeastsoccer.com
- Team schedule
- Copy of your official NCYSA red-stamped roster (for team use only) provided by your registrar
- Copies of your official NCYSA red-stamped Match roster (you will need extras to provide to referees etc.) provided by your registrar
- Official NCYSA player passes (laminated and on a ring is preferable)
- Player information - Some coaches like to put together in a single vinyl sleeve for each player:
- Medical Release Forms, provided by your registrar or downloaded from the NCYSA website.
- Copy of birth certificates (or other approved ID) is no longer kept in the manager's book but on file with the official RMAYSA records.
- Copy of med. insurance cards
- Medical Release Forms, provided by your registrar or downloaded from the NCYSA website.
- One of the main purposes of having this notebook is emergency medical situations. Should a player be injured and a parent not present, pull the pertinent medform/insurance card copy from your book and send it on with the offical delegate to the hospital with the player. Ease of finding this form will seem very important at the time. Keep your notebook with you for all team activities!
- These links will be updated for the coming year but the will provide good insight for this planning time until NCYSA give out the new manuals.
